Botox Use. Are The Risks Worth The Benefit?

As we get older, the development of fine lines and wrinkles are an inevitability. As our skin’s collagen - the protein present in all the body's organs and tissues, which determines your skin’s overall look – naturally breaks down throughout the aging process, fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, dryness, and liver spots begin to form. What’s more, smoking cigarettes, and regular exposure to the sun’s UV rays aggravates the formation of fine lines and wrinkles even further. This is why thousands of Canadians, and millions of people across the world, every year turn to injectable cosmetic treatments such as Botox in an effort to iron out facial wrinkles and to restore their skin for a more youthful appearance. Men and women unlike have turned to Botox injections to fight the aging process. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of the 14.2-million cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures performed in 2015, 6.7-million of those procedures were Botox injections. In 2015, Botox injections were the No. 1 cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.

What is Botox?

Botulinum Toxin Type A, more commonly referred to simply as Botox, is a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While also used for the treatment of neurological disorders, it has become one of the world’s most popular cosmetic solutions for the treatment of wrinkles and other signs of aging. When used in cosmetic surgery, Botox is injected into the targeted area and acts to prevent underlying facial muscles from contracting, effectively reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Typically, the benefits of Boxtox injections for cosmetic purposes last from three to four months.

Are the injections safe?

Generally, yes. The Government of Canada, however, has advised patients considering the use of cosmetic Botox injections to take some precautions. Botox injections should only be performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon or healthcare provider, and should only be performed no more than every two months.

Botox Cosmetic Injections vs. Surgical Procedures

Botox is often looked at as an ideal alternative to cosmetic surgery. Not only is it significantly cheaper than surgical options, but the Botox injection procedure is fast, and far less invasive than facelifts and other cosmetic surgery. One of the biggest advantages to Botox, is that patients often notice the results almost immediately following the procedure. Even when these results aren’t immediately prevalent, patients typically notice the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, and other facial creases within a matter of days.

Unfortunately, signs of aging are an inevitability. Even our simple facial expressions, and daily stress can result in fine lines, creases, and wrinkles over time. Thankfully, innovations such as lip injections can help us preserve our skin and keep wrinkles and fine lines at bay.
