Time to ease up and talk about an issue that is impacting many women. Vaginal health.
Menopause, childbirth and cancer treatments can bring on a laundry list of painful and embarrassing symptoms that can greatly impact a woman’s quality of life. When it comes to vaginal health, many women suffer in silence and can be limited when it comes to treatment options. Fortunately, this is changing!
It’s time to break down these barriers and talk about a new hormone-free treatment that is designed to make vaginas happy and healthy again!
How Estrogen Levels Impact Vaginal Health
Women experience a sharp decrease in estrogen levels during menopause, after childbirth and after certain surgical procedures (such as bilateral oophorectomy - removing the ovaries). These hormone changes often directly impact the health of the vaginal mucosa, primarily through reducing blood flow. This leads to lower levels of lubrication and lowers the pH level to a more basic environment that can make women more prone to yeast infections. These changes in the vagina can bring on a variety of uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms.
- Vaginal dryness
- Painful sex (dyspareunia)
- Painful urination (dysuria)
- Itching and burning sensations
- Urinary incontinence
MonaLisa Touch Laser
In an effort to help women with these health concerns and fill the treatment option void for when estrogen therapy is not an option, Hemingway Medical Spa and Callingwood Crossing Medical Clinic have recently brought in a laser that is revolutionizing women’s health. We are excited to introduce the Mona Lisa Touch®.
The Mona Lisa Touch® is an FDA approved treatment for vulvovaginal atrophy, a predominant symptom of estrogen deficiency. The MonaLisa Touch® delivers microbeams of laser energy (fractionated energy) to the vaginal wall tissue that stimulates a healing response. The laser delivers both immediate and lasting relief with results often noticed after the first treatment.
Without using any hormones, the MonaLisa Touch® laser can restore the natural acidic pH, increase blood flow to the vagina and thicken the vaginal wall. This is a result of thermal injury that brings new cells and vascularity to the treated area.
The Mona Lisa Touch® has helped women restore their sexual health and self-confidence.
There are different treatment options for vaginal symptoms of menopause, and it is important to discuss these with your primary care provider or gynecologist.
The first step is to meet with a certified and licensed physician at Callingwood Crossing Medical Clinic to go over your medical history and symptoms (this appointment can be booked through Hemingway Medical Spa). The initial consultation is thorough and takes 15-30 minutes. If you’re a candidate for the procedure, you will be booked in for your first treatment.
The procedure itself will seem similar to a ‘pap’ test. The laser is inserted into the vagina to deliver laser energy pulses. The first part of the treatment uses an internal probe that treats 360 degrees and the entire length of the vaginal canal. The second part of the procedure uses a different handpiece that treats the external mucosa and skin. Some patients experience a mild discomfort with the probe insertion (due to vaginal dryness), but the actual treatment itself is quite painless.
The laser treatment is quick, about five minutes. Budget around 45 minutes for the full treatment to allow time for the application of a topical local anesthetic. We suggest not planning any activities for the remainder of the day, as some patients find that the treated area can be a bit sensitive and irritated (usually lasting less than 24 hours).
For the best results, patients are required to complete three treatments (one treatment every six weeks). A year after the series of treatments are completed, only one treatment a year is required for maintenance. Depending on the patient's response to the treatment, they may require less maintenance than this.
