While you might have had a comfy office chair and an ergonomic desk at work, your work from home situation might be a little different. Luckily, there are remote work tips that you can follow in order to keep you both productive and comfortable.

1. Dress Comfortable But Ready to Work

Dressing comfortably when you’re working from home doesn’t mean working in your pajamas. While it might be tempting, you most likely won’t be able to get into the professional mindset that you need to get into in order to get your work done in time. 

There’s no need to dress as formally as when you used to go to the office. For example, you probably don’t need to wear a suit and tie every day now. But the simple act of changing into a new pair of clothes in the morning is going to help to get you into the right headspace for work. 

You should wear clothes that aren’t too tight and are made from comfortable materials like cotton. It’s also a good idea to take a shower and brush your hair in the morning. But you can probably skip the make-up if you want. 

2. Designate Your Workspace

When you’re working from home, it’s very easy to turn any area in your home into your work area. Whether that’s on the couch, in the dining room, or on your bed. But when you work from your bed, you’ll probably end up slouching and craning your neck. 

Instead, you should have a space that you can keep as your work area. You should keep this workspace clean and neat, with work materials easy to access. 

You’re going to be spending many hours in this workspace every day, so you want it to be comfortable, bright, and inviting. Find a place with good natural lighting. Even if you don’t spend a lot of time outside, losing that time of being outdoors on your way to work can start to weigh on you.

By being by a window, you’ll be able to let some of the natural world into your space. 

3. Pay Attention to Ergonomics

You’re going to be spending a lot of hours in that new workspace of yours. Because of this, you’ll want to invest in a comfortable office chair with back support. 

You’ll also want to think more specifically about the seat cushion. The best seat cushion is going to differ from person to person but we really like ones made of memory foam. 

The great thing about memory foam is that it’s able to mold to the shape of your body. This means that it can give you good support without putting pressure on certain weight points on the body. If you have a seat cushion that isn’t made out of memory foam, then all of your weight is going to be placed on your hip bones. 

Memory foam helps to more evenly distribute your weight. 

It’s also a good idea to get yourself a high-quality hands-free headset. Or at the very least, you should have a good pair of earbuds that you can put on whenever you have a phone call.

Holding your phone next to your ear for several hours while on a conference is uncomfortable and also unsustainable. 

4. Swap Out Sugary Drinks with Flavored Water and Tea

Drinking sugary beverages will make you irritable, bloated, and overall uncomfortable. Because of this, you should avoid sugar-heavy drinks whenever you can. 

Consider drinking seltzer, flavored water, and vegetable smoothies instead. Drinking black tea can help give you a caffeine boost but without the jitters that come with coffee. If you do drink coffee, you should drink it black, without milk or sugar.

For tea, you can add a few drops of honey if you want to add a little sweetness to your morning cup. And don’t forget to drink plenty of regular water too. 

Staying hydrated is going to help keep you alert, feeling mentally clear, and will assist you with avoiding cramps and headaches. 

5. Snack Smart

Just like how you should avoid sugary drinks, you should avoid sugary snacks too. Skip the candy bars and instead opt for seeds and nuts. These are going to provide you with healthy fats and proteins that are going to keep you feeling energetic and light.
