What is Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain is a pain in the abdomen, which is felt below your belly button. There are many reasons why people, especially women, experience this. The pain may be severe and start without warning, or it could start as a dull ache and get worse. The pain can be acute or mild and can last for months or years in some cases.

If you are experiencing symptoms, it’s a good idea to see your doctor as soon as possible. Some women will be referred to a doctor, known as a gynecologist, who specializes in the female reproductive system. Men are less likely to be affected by pelvic pain and conditions are more common with women. In some cases, the exact cause of the pain will be unknown, as it can’t always be identified.

Conditions That Cause Pelvic Pain

Many conditions cause pelvic pain. These are often chronic or acute in nature and are experienced by women who aren’t pregnant. It can be caused by growths in the female reproduction system, infection, or bowel problems.

Growths

An Ovarian cyst is a common cause of pelvic pain. This is a sac that’s filled with fluid that grows on the ovary or ovaries. It can cause severe or acute pain if it bursts or starts to twist. Other conditions include a pelvic abscess. This is when pus forms between a woman’s womb and vagina. Pelvic abbesses will need urgent treatment at a hospital.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop on the uterus and, in many women, cause abdominal pain. If you have fibroids, you may be offered an operation to remove them, or medication which will help them to shrink and eventually disappear altogether.

Endometriosis is a painful condition where mild to severe pelvic pain is felt. If you have endometriosis, pieces of your womb lining will start to grow and develop outside the womb and on the ovaries. This leads to menstruation problems.

Infections

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a common condition that creates pain in women. This is due to a bacterial infection that resides in thewomb, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. If you’ve recently had an STD, especially chlamydia or gonorrhea, you’ll be more at risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease. This type of infection should be treated immediately with antibiotics.

A urinary tract infection can also cause pain in this region. Symptoms include pelvic pain as well as a burning feeling when urinating. You may also need to go to the toilet more often than usual.

Other Causes of Pelvic Pain

You may also experience pelvic pain if you’re constipated or have a grumbling appendix. Constipation can be caused by some medications and by a change in your diet. Constipation is common in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.
