Yeasts are generally used for fermentation, such as in the production of bread, wine and beer, but these organisms can also be consumed for their array of beneficial nutrients. Strains of the yeast are most commonly used for brewing, baking and health purposes, since they consume sugars, are organisms rich in proteins, B vitamins, and minerals. Often sold as protein supplements, these energy boosters and immune enhancers and have been credited with being used to reduce the risk of colds and flu.
