The emails and tasks keep pouring in at work. But, you’ve got this. The kids have swimming lessons, dance lessons, and you’ve gotta cram supper in somewhere too. No problem. Laundry, paying bills, exercise… don’t worry because you’re killing it like a #RockStar! Except… you wake up the next morning with a cold.

Have you ever noticed the moment you slow down is the moment everything comes crashing down? Maybe because you aren’t selfish enough. And hey, who says being selfish has to be a bad thing?

In this age of busy-ness the concept of taking care of ourselves has evolved from exercise and eating well to deliberate downtime, stress relief and activities that take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Yet, we often put self-care on the backburner. We prioritize friends, family, and work before our own well-being… and before we know it, we’re completely out of commission. Self care shouldn’t be considered as an occasional fix. Self care is not an adrenaline needle. It isn’t meant to be injected into your heart at the last possible moment. It’s a commitment that you make to yourself. It needs to be a consistent part of your lifestyle.

So, what is self care? Well, it’s different for everyone. To one person self care is a spiritual evolution, to another it’s a physical transformation, and to others it’s just getting the damned big popcorn at the movie theatre. It empowers us to remove self-doubt. This can be through traditional practices like yoga, meditation, and decompressing in nature. But, that isn’t how everyone achieves bliss. If you’re truly accepting yourself you shouldn’t spend one second doubting what will truly make you happy. The only way to recharge your soul is to restock what you feel is missing. So, go find it! And give yourself permission to have it.

I see it everyday at Bliss Yoga Spa. I see the weight that’s lifted from people when they dedicate time to themselves; when they just stop for an hour and allow themselves to enjoy a massage. The feeling of being nurtured can awaken memories of childhood; of a simpler time when that ever-present parent could make everything better. We need that feeling of safety and belonging. We also need to embrace our vulnerabilities. Because burying our emotions is how we got ourselves so tangled up in the first place.

That’s why I believe medi-spa treatments and cosmetic procedures should be considered as an important part of your self care plan. Everybody on the planet has something that they wish was different about themselves. If it’ll help you remove self doubt to have laser hair removal… do it. Imagine how much better your free time will be if you aren’t worrying about people looking at your stray patch of hair. I mean… they really aren’t looking. But, it isn’t about them is it? It’s about you. Lasers can combat everything from fine lines and wrinkles to sun spots and skin tightening. They use our body’s own systems to heal and grow collagen to brighten our skin. Healthy, glowing skin can create a confident outward appearance that reflects your inner personality. Embrace it if that’s important to you.

Then there’s sublative skin rejuvenation. An alternative to chemical peels, microneedling and microdermabrasion. But, Instead of using needles, light or fraxel lasers, sublative rejuvenation uses radio frequency technology to tighten skin, erase fine lines, shrink large pores, heal acne scarring and most importantly… remove anxiety. Why wouldn’t we want to feel confident in our outer appearance?

Even with our body contouring treatments, sometimes we just cannot work out enough to get those last stubborn areas. We see them, we agonize over them, and we judge ourselves unfairly. Many people believe we should accept ourselves and not consider alternatives, and that’s cool for them. But, it doesn’t have to be for you. Stress, hormones, and nutrition have influenced our endocrine system to store fat in some pretty ridiculous areas. I know where mine are and I’m sure you know where yours are too. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to deal with that. UltraShape Power can reduce unwanted fat up to 32% with no pain. It’s clinically proven. That’s a pretty easy confidence boost if you’re looking for one.

The last area of medi-spa treatment that I would consider to be self-care is cosmetic injectables; specifically dermal fillers. By using naturally occurring hyurolonic acid we’re able to rejuvenate your face, without looking fake. Don’t worry. You aren’t going to come out looking like a Hollywood horror story. Promise! It’s just a little refresher to get rid of dark circles, bring those cheekbones back into place and add some lost volume. It’s a cheat code for your face. And again… you’re still going to look like a human! Just a happier one.

So, what is self care to you? Daily meditation? Awesome! Bike riding in the river valley? Heck yes! Another bag of popcorn!?! Ummmm, I guess… sure! Whatever it is, give yourself the time to do it. Do what makes you happy and never apologize for it. Fall in love with yourself over and over again.

Just. Be. Selfish.

Because it isn’t a bad word, and nobody can do it for you.
