Inexpensive Whole Food Supplements

Canada and the United States have seen some strange trends in food buying patterns over the past couple years. People are recognizing the importance of high quality organic food which is resulting in organic products showing up in grocery stores everywhere. Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the market for inexpensive, processed foods and supplements. While the first is wonderful to see, the marketing strategies used to sell the later are troubling as people think the food they are eating is healthy for them. Thankfully, there are some whole food supplements available in the market that are relatively inexpensive and extremely nutritious.

Honey
Honey is a food with hundreds of health benefits and has been used for thousands of years for everything from  topical wound dressing to a sucrose substitute as a sweetener. According to a 2012 article in the journal "Molecules", honey's medicinal benefits include being an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and offers liver protection. This is due to the variety of antioxidants which are responsible for repair of cellular damage. Honey is by far more expensive than sugar, but the added cost is worth the health benefits it offers.

Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are edible, oil-filled seeds that have been consumed by humans for millenia. According to research published in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," they are the richest plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids on the planet. For this reason, we often see animals fed a diet rich in flax in order for their meat and meat products to contain these omega-3's. Flaxseeds are rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, which have been linked to reductions in cardiovascular disease, constipation and colon cancer. Nutritionists and dietitians recommend consuming 2 to 4 tablespoons of flaxseeds per day, which should cost you no more than a quarter per serving.

Brewer's Yeast
Yeasts are generally used for fermentation, such as in the production of bread, wine and beer, but these organisms can also be consumed for their array of beneficial nutrients. Strains of the yeast are most commonly used for brewing, baking and health purposes, since they consume sugars, are organisms rich in proteins, B vitamins, and minerals. Often sold as protein supplements, these energy boosters and immune enhancers and have been credited with being used to reduce the risk of colds and flu.

Algae
Eating algae might not sound very appealing, but these superfoods are some of the most nutrient-dense organisms on the planet. Spirulina and chlorella are two of the more popular micro-algae supplements on the market. These photosynthetic supplements are credited with being rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and vitamin E. They also appear to have other health properties including being antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and anti-cancer agents. Researchers from India have even gone so far as to state that spirulina is nature's richest and most complete source of nutrition.
